First Doily Experience
– from a crochet designer’s POV –
Cheryl Frye speaks
Before this doily, had you ever worked with thread before? (Did you find it difficult or pretty easy to get accustomed to?)
Before this project I had very limited use of thread. When I was younger I attempted to make Barbie doll clothes with crochet thread. It was a disaster. I crochet tightly and every attempt I made with the doll clothes came out much too small. I found that working with the thread took a little getting used to, keeping my stitches uniform was difficult. I wasn’t used to the thread so my tension on the stitches was “iffy.”
What was the deciding factor for you to move forward into working with thread again?
I was drawn to this pattern because of the pinwheel shape. It looked intriguing to me. I also noticed when reading through the pattern that it wasn’t quite as big as the tulip doily, not so intimidating. I made a practice one out of ecru thread to make sure I could make the pattern. I have a tendency to jump in feet first and look later!! This time I “controlled myself.”
What made me go to thread again was simple, I was bored with worsted weight yarn and cotton and wanted to do something that was a little out of my comfort zone. I have a whole box full of thread and supplies from my Mother-in-law that was calling to me.
